Breastfeeding is normal, it's natural and our right to do it in public is protected.

American mothers "have the right to breastfeed your baby wherever and whenever your baby is hungry," according to the U.S. Department of Health Human Services' Office on Women's Health . Until this year, Idaho was the one state that had no protections for breastfeeding mothers, but that has changed .

Now all 50 states (and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) have laws that protect a mom's right to breastfeed in public, notes the National Conference of State Legislators.

The American Academy of Pediatrics , the Visa Payment Sale Online Sale Excellent Tory Burch Woman Floralappliqu Order Cheap Price Wiki Sale Online Cheap Sale RcEmFxg4w
, and the World Health Organization all encourage women to breastfeed and want to raise breastfeed rates in the United States. These organizations encourage exclusive breastfeeding because a growing body of evidence suggests breastfeeding offers optimal nutritional and immune system benefits , including lower risks for asthma, obesity, type 2 diabetes, ear and respiratory infections and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

According to the CDC , 63.74% of Americans believe women should have the right to breastfeed in public places, and 57.75% say they are "comfortable when mothers breastfeed their babies near me in a public place."

Just over 19% of Americans are not comfortable seeing mothers breastfeed in public, but it's important to remember that a mother's right to breastfeed is legally protected, comfort in public spaces is not. Unfortunately, research suggests that "restaurant and shopping center managers have reported that they would either discourage breastfeeding anywhere in their facilities or would suggest that breastfeeding mothers move to an area that was more secluded."

Those attitudes are changing, but there are still many people who do not understand that breastfeeding moms have a right to feed their babies in public.

Recently, an Illinois mother who was waiting in (a very, very long) line during the Build-A-Bear Pay Your Age event was reportedly discouraged from nursing by a mall security guard. Fellow moms were not having it, and held a peaceful protest inside the shopping center last Saturday.

"We do not agree with the officer's decision to approach the mother and his actions do not reflect the views of this shopping center," the mall's General Manager said in a statement to the Outlet Reliable Diane Von Furstenberg Woman Scalloped Corded Lace Dress Blush Size 14 Diane Von F Clearance Online Amazon Pre Order Quality For Sale Free Shipping Find Great Cheap Online mt9Nl
. The manager apologized and said the shopping center will continue to support breastfeeding rights in the future.

So what can a mother do if she is approached by someone who discourages her from nursing in public?

"Remember that the law protects your right to feed your baby any place you need to. You do not need to respond to anyone who criticizes you for breastfeeding," the CDC states on its website. "If you feel in danger, move away from the person criticizing you and look for people who can support you.

We can breastfeed at bus stops, at restaurants, at the public pool, at the library, at the mall, or anywhere we need to. It's our responsibility to feed our children when they are hungry, and it's our right, too.

Take a moment to think of your first memory. Now guess how old you were when you lived it.

If you weren’t at least 3 years old at that point, chances are, that memory is fake. In a , nearly 40% of people surveyed reported a memory that happened when they were age 2 or younger — which probably means they’re false.

Generally speaking, scientists believe that memories start to form at age 3 or 3 1/2. But it’s not that nearly 40% of study participants are lying. Instead, they’re likely piecing together fragments of remembered experiences and things they’ve learned about their childhood through photographs or stories.

“The person remembering them doesn’t know this is fictional,” Martin Conway, one of the paper’s authors and the director of the Centre for Memory and Law at the City University of London, said in a . “In fact when people are told that their memories are false, they often don’t believe it. This partly due to the fact that the systems that allow us to remember things are very complex, and it’s not until we’re 5 or 6 that we form adult-like memories due to the way that the brain develops and due to our maturing understanding of the world.”

Of the 6,641 people surveyed, 893 (roughly 13%) said their first memory dated back to age 1 or younger. Middle-aged and older adults were more likely to believe they had an impossibly early memory.

Itpossible that research participants remembered true events but simply misplaced the date. However, one thing is for sure: Your mind is playing tricks on you if you remember the day you were born... or anything even two years after that.

Office of Ceremonies

Why do we have commencement and convocation ceremonies? What ultimate purpose do they serve and what role does tradition play in realizing that purpose?

In 2014, former University Marshal and professor of philosophy Dr. Ronald Moore addressed these questions in an inspirational presentation to the Northwest Regional Meeting of the National Association of Commencement Officers on the campus of the University of Washington.

Dr. Moore stepped down as University Marshal in 2015, after 17 years of service in that role.

The University Marshal is the official bearer of the mace, which symbolizes the governing power of the university, and the master of ceremonies at the University’s commencement and new student convocation ceremonies. The University Marshal is the first to welcome our incoming students at the new student convocation and, four years later, it is his voice that announces the ceremonial conclusion of their undergraduate experience when he declares the “Commencement Exercises of the University of Washington are now closed.”

The punctuation points of experience

Dr. Moore began his address by noting that he not only likes commencement ceremonies, he has serious philosophical reasons for enjoying the occasion. He stressed the value of “punctuation” points in life and cited John Dewey’s view that “value most readily accrues to experience when we articulate it into episodes with beginnings, middles, and end.” The meaningfulness of an experience is necessarily bound up in this sense of form and in the arrival at an end point.

Commencement exercises and convocations serve as the punctuation points of academic experience, and as such theycontribute in profound ways to themeaning of that experience.

The four Ionic columns featured during commencement symbolize the UW’s early beginnings. (Click on photo to enlarge.)

At the University of Washington commencement ceremony, graduates once again experience the themes that were introduced at their new student convocation – the academic regalia, the procession of the gowned faculty, the music, the mace and the four Ionic columns that symbolize the early beginnings of the university in 1861. The University Marshal delivers the first official University greeting to the incoming students at convocation and places the “period” on their undergraduate life when he announces, four years later, the close of the commencement exercises, picks up the mace and leads the recession.

Dr. Moore also talked about the place of tradition in academic ceremonies. Tradition, he said, is, of its very nature, something that is acquired over time. He offered an example from his own life. Years ago, after one Christmas, he took down the tree and decided to keep the trunk, thinking that it was good wood and could be burned in the fireplace the following year. Over time this became a tradition – the previous year’s tree became the yule log for the following Christmas.

“I have a new hero. Jean Van de Velde, The Man Who Gave Away the British Open.” I wrote that Van de Velde had “remained true to himself” and that had he geared down and played the hole safely and won with a double bogey, he would have been quickly forgotten.

As it turned out, because of his tragedy (self-inflicted though it was), he gained far more fame for losing than Lawrie did for winning (which is unfair to Lawrie, but that’s a tale for another time). I’ll also wager that Van de Velde gained far more fans for the grace with which he took his defeat than he would have had he won. See Norman, Greg, Augusta, 1996.

Van de Velde may have made some questionable decisions – hitting driver off the tee, bringing water into play on his third shot when he had a horrible lie – but he had reasons for all of them. Nowhere do you see him saying “I am such an idiot” a la Phil Mickelson, or “What a stupid I am” a la Roberto De Vicenzo.

“Sure, I could have hit four wedges,” he recently told Golf Channel. “Wouldn’t they have said, ‘He won The Open, but, hey, he hit four wedges.’ I mean, who hits four wedges?”

There’s a great scene in the 1991 movie “The Commitments,” about putting a soul-music band together in the slums of Dublin. Against all odds, the band reaches the brink of success before sinking in a maelstrom of arguments and fistfights after its last gig.

Manager Jimmy Rabbitte is trudging home through the gloom, when saxophonist Joey “The Lips” Fagan rides up on his ever-present scooter. Joey tries to get Jimmy to see the bright side.

Look, I know you're hurting now, but in time you'll realize what you've achieved,” Joey says.

“I've achieved nothing!” Jimmy snaps.

“You're missing the point,” Joey replies. “The success of the band was irrelevant - you raised their expectations of life, you lifted their horizons. Sure we could have been famous and made albums and stuff, but that would have been predictable. This way it's poetry.’

That’s what Jean Van de Velde created on that memorable Scottish day in July 1999.

Poetry.
